Barbourville, KY.. The Small Town Life

The Small Town Life
Barbourville is a small town located in Southeastern Kentucky. The population as of 2009 is 3576. Even though it is small, Barbourville portrays a strong southern hospitality. The town provides a homey feeling. It is a town with friendly people where everyone knows each other. The town is a safe community that has much to offer to average person with a strong family atmosphere, parks, and festivals. There are many small parks and safe playgrounds for children as well as small restaurants for gatherings with friends. The downtown area is small supporting the center of the town with the courthouse square. There are small dress shops, drug stores, and offices that surround the courthouse to make up the downtown area. It is a friendly country town that supports the family environment. Homemakers as well as business people would find a lot to love in Barbourville.

Barbourville host two festivals every year. Whats a small town without the town gatherings? The Redbud Festival held in Barbourville every spring lets people enjoy artisan crafts as well as bluegrass music and workshops that teach aspects and traits of the culture. The Daniel Boone Festival, held in the fall, also represents the strong heritage of the town. Honoring one of the most heroic figures to explore this region with good food, crafts, carnival rides, and entertainment including a parade and local concerts.

History of Barbourville
Barbourville is also a town with a strong history. In 1861 Barbourville hosted Kentuckys first civil war battle. Today the town host a Civil War Reenactment every september to remember the event and history of the town. This year marked the 147th anniversary of the event. The town has recently added paintings and a small courtyard downtown in honor of battle. The battle however is not the only history in barbourville. The town is also very pround of it's appalachian roots. Being located in the applachia mountain range provides Barbourville with the history and the beauty of the appalacha.

Scenery and Parks of Barbourville
As previously stated Barbourville is located in the beautiful appalachian moutrian range. It also is a country town with large areas of gorgeous farm land. The beauty of this small town is one of its best features. The rolling hills and moutain ranges makes it perfect for special occasions and photography. Located in Kentucky, Barbourville sees full effect of all four seasons. In Barbourville you can experience the beauty of the fall colors, white winters, the flowers of spring, and the hot summers. Any season the parks and scenery of the town is to die for.
To add to the natural beauty there are many parks built around the area. Dr. Thomas Walker State Historic Site is one of the main attractions Barbourville has to offer. Dr. Thomas Walker was the first frontiersman in Kentucky. He also built the first cabin in Kentucky, of which there is a replica at the site. The park also has a gift shop, playground and shelter area, and a minitature golf course on site. This is a perfect place for families to go and enjoy a sunny day with friends in the small town. Besides Dr. Thomas Walker Park Barbourville is in close proximity to two state parks, Cumberland Falls State Park in Corbin and Pine Moutain State Park in Pineville, and a national park Cumberland Gap National Historic Park.

Aside from the historic sites the town also has some parks built more for fun. The Barbourville waterpark is perfect for the children and teens of the area. Not only do they have cheap prices but the park is good size with a wave pool, lazy river, and two slides. They park also has a 9 hole miniature golf course and paddle boats for the pond located in front of the park. The water park is ideal summer fun for the whole family.

Industrial Park
Worried about finding jobs in Barbourville? As in any small town this is usually a problem. Recently Barbourville built a new Industrial Park which includes the new knox county hospital and a global corporation CSC or Datatrac. CSC is an Information Technology business that provides many different services for Government Clients. The industrial park is located on a large area of land and should continue expanding. Besides the industrial park Barbourville is a great place for small business owners. With the small town atmosphere it is easy to build strong customer relationships as well as friendships. Even though Barbourville is a small town it is convently located near two major interstates, 15 minutes from Interstate I-75 and directly on 25E. This makes transportation to and from the town easier as well as draws in tourist which is good for local businesses.

Education
There are two high schools located in the area, Barbourville High School and Knox Central High School, both are public schools. Barbourville High School is part of an independent school district providing elementry schools as well as high school. Knox Central High School (shown on right) recently relocted to build a very nice new facility off of 25E. Both schools are relatively small in size offering a more one on one feel with the teachers and making it easier to make new friends. They also offer an excellent education for the area as well as excelling in athletics. There is always something to get involved in with both schools. Aside from high schools there are many elementry schools throughout the district to aspire the one on one attention your children need.

Union College is also located in the city of Barbourville making it easier for the children of the area to get a good education. Union College is known as the first college of the mountians as it was established in 1879. Like the town the college is rather small in size. Making it easier to have the one on one environment with the faculty and staff. Union College provides a higher education as well as the full college experience to young adults ready to take on the world.

The Place To Be
As you can see Barbourville has a lot to offer to the average person or family, providing a strong friendly community as well as good education and strong history. There are many ways to enjoy the average day from a walk in downtown court square to a relaxing day at the waterpark. With flourishing businesses, higher education system, and the beauty of the moutains Barbourville is ever expanding. As stated before everyone can fit in and find something to love about the small town of Barbourville.
